When I saw this week's challenge come across the wires, my heart sank a little. We'd not seen the sun (and therefore no shadows) for two weeks in my town and the old SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) was knocking on my door. Don't get me wrong - winter has some very cool aspects (I love a good pun!) but I wouldn't like to live in places like the USA Northwest or Rotorua (which I did for five long years). Summer is definitely more my cup of peppermint tea.
But then I thought - hold on; you're a photographer! You don't take photos, you make them. If the light's not right, you either wait until it is or you make your own light. And so I pulled out a Speedlight and set it up on the floor, camera right.
Posing Rocky, I took a few test shots to make sure the angle and quality of the light was both convincing as winter sunlight and cast enough of a shadow, then brought in Horse. Steve helped by posing Horse in Rocky's shadow - you seriously think these two four-footers just hang out together waiting for me to photograph them? Noooo! You get one where you want him and the other decides he's had enough. But it all came together, with this image as the result.
Of course, as I write this, I'm looking out the window at clear blue skies and a sunny (albeit cold) day. But hey - I can make my own sunshine.
Now let's take a stroll around the world and see what kinds of shadows the others are finding. First up we have Cincinnati pet photographer, Suzi Pix Photography - keep clicking the links until you come full circle back to here. See you again soon!
