Sometimes my Facebook stream actually includes a post from a page I've followed, giving me an update without my having to select 'Get Notifications'. Recently, it was Gannet Beach Adventures with a photo of the first chick of the season. It reminded me of the trip Steve and I took out to Cape Kidnappers last January, finally realising a dream I'd had for many years.
It's simply one of those things you must do while in Hawke's Bay, like watching the vintage car parade during Art Deco week. And seeing as we're now living in the Bay, we'll be back for another visit this summer; imagine that - after all this time, I'll see the gannets twice in as many years.
Just remember to 'slip, slop, slap' and protect your skin from the sun while you spend time with these graceful birds.
Well... I say graceful, but there's that rather tricky takeoff and landing thing that seems to get them every time. Enjoy your summer, folks - fingers crossed it'll be a corker.
